Edirne, Turkey



Edirne is located near the borders with Bulgaria and Greece. Its population is nearly 157,000 people.
Edirne's economy largely depends on agriculture. Mainly corn, sugar beet, sunflower, melons, rice, tomatoes and others are grown here. Viticulture is also well-developed.
Edirne is a large educational center. The Thracian University is here, founded in the 80s of the twentieth century, renowned for its medical school, hospital and Symphony Orchestra.
The city is rich in historical and cultural monuments from different ages. Among them is the Selimiye Mosque, built in 1575 and designed by the famous builder Sinan who built the mosque in Sofia. Important architectural landmarks are the old bridges over the rivers Maritza, Tundja and Arda. Other interesting sights are the medieval tower of the prison and the old rail station Karaach (1890) which today houses the rector’s offices of the Thracian University in the city. Symbolic of the city is the historical covered bazaar.

The Twinning Agreement between Haskovo and Edirne was signed on 16.02.2009.
